In a bold pledge ahead of this year's election, the New Patriotic Party's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined a strategic plan to financially empower traditional leaders. Dr. Bawumia asserts that providing financial resources to chiefs is crucial for them to effectively contribute to national development.
Addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs during a three-day tour that commenced on June 10, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need to amend Section 63 (D) of the Chieftaincy Act. This amendment aims to legally empower chiefs, facilitating a more robust partnership between traditional authorities and the government.
"We need to empower the chiefs to help the government, and this empowerment goes beyond legal changes. It includes financially resourcing the chiefs," Dr. Bawumia stated. He stressed that without adequate financial support, chiefs are hindered in their ability to fulfill their roles effectively.
Dr. Bawumia's manifesto proposes the introduction of living allowances for paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers. This initiative seeks to create a fully empowered chieftaincy institution capable of significantly contributing to governance and development.
"My manifesto team has considered all aspects. We propose paying living allowances to paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers, ensuring a comprehensive support system for the chieftaincy institution," Dr. Bawumia explained.
Dr. Bawumia's tour of the Ashanti Region was marked by a warm reception from Asanteman. Reflecting on this, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with a diverse array of groups, including the Clergy, Imams, Zongo Chiefs, professional bodies, and the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia shared, "It was indeed a privilege and an honor to meet with these special groups, to share my vision for Ghana, and to seek their blessings and prayers. Their concerns, encouragement, and insightful suggestions are invaluable as I aim to serve our country as President, by the grace of God."
Dr. Bawumia concluded his message with a note of appreciation for the constructive feedback received during his tour. "I am immensely grateful to Nananom and all the groups for their time and input. Their support and insights will enhance my transformational vision and policies for the benefit of our country and its citizens."
As the election approaches, Dr. Bawumia's commitment to financially resourcing chiefs underscores his broader vision for a collaborative and prosperous Ghana, where traditional leaders play a pivotal role in governance and development.
