A catastrophic fire erupted in a two-storey hostel at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Thursday night, leaving students reeling from the unexpected disaster.
The flames engulfed the entire second floor of the nine-bedroom hostel, turning personal belongings to ashes and leaving students homeless and heartbroken. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
DO3 Peter Addai, Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Fire Service, informed Citi News that efforts to control the blaze were intense and that investigations are ongoing to uncover the cause.
While the second floor was completely destroyed, eleven rooms were spared from the flames and remain habitable.
In the wake of this crisis, the KNUST Students Representative Council (SRC) has swiftly arranged temporary accommodation for the displaced students at the SRC hostel. The SRC also urges all students to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
