In a decisive move to curb illegal land activities, thirteen individuals have been arrested by the police for allegedly filling and unlawfully developing parts of the Laboma and Teshie Military shooting range. This area is situated within the Kpeshie Lagoon in the La Dade-Kotopon municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

During an inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), it was discovered that significant portions of the Kpeshie Lagoon had been filled for construction purposes, with several structures in various stages of completion.

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, Chairman of REGSEC, addressed the media, stating that all unauthorized structures would be demolished in the upcoming days.

“They were apprehended because we need to identify the actual owners of these structures. Many of those we detained are merely workers who claim they were hired for the job,” he explained.

He further elaborated, “These individuals are currently in police custody and will undergo due process. They will need to identify who instructed them to work here. Once they do, they will be granted bail, and the law will proceed accordingly.”

Titus-Glover emphasized that structures encroaching on the Kpeshie Lagoon and its surroundings would be demolished. “We will demolish the structure near the Kpeshie. There’s another one on the left, right at the edge of the Kpeshie, which will also be taken down. Additionally, any construction near the shooting range will be removed.”

He also called on the community to come forward with information, particularly to identify those who sold the land. “My traditional leaders insist they have not sold this land to anyone,” he stated.

This action by the REGSEC underscores a firm stance against unauthorized land development, ensuring the protection of public lands and adherence to legal processes.
