In a recent survey conducted by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the leading candidate for the role of running mate to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The survey, which included input from 5,116 NPP delegates across the country, highlighted Dr. Prempeh's strong support within the party.
The survey covered a diverse group of NPP members, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives. Dr. Prempeh secured an impressive 76.2% of the delegates' votes, showcasing his popularity and influence within the party ranks.
Following Dr. Prempeh was Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, who received 10.16% of the votes. Other notable figures considered for the running mate position included Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.
As the 2024 general election approaches, Dr. Bawumia faces the critical decision of selecting a running mate from among these prominent party members. The survey indicates a strong preference for the running mate to be chosen from the Ashanti Region, with approximately 84% of respondents favoring this option. Dr. Prempeh's charisma and widespread popularity among party members make him the favored choice.
However, the NIB report also cautioned the flagbearer to consider potential challenges associated with Dr. Prempeh's current role as Minister of Energy. The ongoing power crises in Ghana could impact his candidacy, and the report suggests that the government may need to implement measures to reinforce his competence in managing the energy sector. This strategic move could enhance the NPP's prospects in the upcoming elections.
