President Akufo-Addo has shed light on the profound impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Africa, emphasizing the severe economic repercussions, soaring inflation, and deteriorating living standards across the continent.
Speaking at the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, President Akufo-Addo articulated the far-reaching consequences of the war beyond Europe. "We oppose colonialism and domination, but in this context, we view Russian aggression in Ukraine," he stated, highlighting Africa's unintended victimization due to the disrupted global supply chains.
"The invasion's effects extend well beyond Europe. In many ways, Africa has been the greatest victim," President Akufo-Addo reiterated. He elaborated on how these disruptions have led to significant economic downturns, with skyrocketing food prices and high inflation severely impacting the living standards of millions.
President Akufo-Addo underscored the necessity of Africa's involvement in resolving the conflict, asserting, "We have an interest in participating in efforts to find a solution to this conflict." He called for a resolution founded on comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
Furthermore, the President emphasized the critical role of major global players, including Russia and China, in the peace process. "If we’re ever going to arrive at a definitive settlement, their involvement is essential," he stated, underscoring the importance of inclusive and collaborative efforts to achieve lasting peace.
The President's address at the summit served as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of global events and their profound impacts on regions far removed from the immediate conflict zones. His call for peace and collaboration resonates with the urgent need for a unified global response to mitigate the far-reaching consequences of the war on vulnerable economies like those in Africa.
