The Ministry of Health has earnestly appealed to the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union (MELPWU) to reconsider their decision to strike and to re-engage in negotiations.
In a recent press release dated June 17, 2024, the Ministry emphasized the importance of continuing discussions without disruption. "Negotiations are ongoing, and we urge MELPWU leadership to return to the negotiation table alongside the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission," the statement read.
The Ministry further called on MELPWU members to exercise patience, assuring them that the Government Negotiation Team is working diligently to expedite the talks. “We are committed to respecting and addressing your concerns. In the spirit of cooperation, we hope the strike will be called off swiftly,” the Ministry expressed.
MELPWU had planned to initiate a strike on June 17 to press the government for approval and implementation of their proposed Conditions of Service. According to the Ministry of Health, extensive negotiations have been ongoing since 2023, led by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The Ministry noted significant progress, with most of MELPWU’s proposals being accepted. However, negotiations on allowances for uniforms, special projects, unsociable hours, and communication are still in progress.
The Ministry’s appeal underscores the critical need for uninterrupted dialogue to reach a mutually beneficial agreement and ensure the welfare of all stakeholders.
