Dr. Opoku Prempeh Resigns as Energy Minister to Bawumia's Running Mate.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has officially stepped down from his role as Ghana's Minister for Energy. This decision comes after his nomination and eventual confirmation as the vice-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), running alongside the party's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.


In a statement issued by the presidency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his acceptance of Dr. Opoku Prempeh's resignation, which takes effect from July 18, 2024. The President highlighted that this move allows Dr. Opoku Prempeh to dedicate his efforts to his new political role.


"The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has today, Thursday, 11th July 2024, accepted the resignation from office of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as Minister for Energy, with effect from 18th July 2024," the statement read.


President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his outstanding service and achievements during his tenure. "President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep gratitude to Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for his dedicated service to the government and the people of Ghana. His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors," the statement continued.


With Dr. Opoku Prempeh's departure, the President has appointed Hon. Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, to oversee the Ministry of Energy. Additionally, Herbert Krapa, the Minister-of-State-designate at the Ministry of Energy, will handle daily administrative duties. The President emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, urging close collaboration between these officials and Dr. Opoku Prempeh.


"The President extends his best wishes and God’s blessings to Dr. Opoku Prempeh in his new role, and is confident that he will continue to serve the party and the nation with distinction," Eugene Arhin, Director of Communication at the presidency, conveyed in the statement.


This significant political shift sets the stage for an exciting election season, as Dr. Opoku Prempeh steps into his new role, ready to contribute to the NPP's campaign and the future of Ghana.
