In a call for unity and integrity, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has urged political parties to respect and accept the results of the upcoming 2024 general elections. During a significant event in Accra, where the Democracy Cup was presented to the EC by Parliament's leadership, Mensa emphasized the Commission's commitment to conducting transparent and fair elections.
Drawing a parallel with the role of referees in a football match, Mensa highlighted the EC's function as the overseers of the electoral process. She assured that from the preparatory stages to election day, every step will be open, fair, and involve collaboration with key stakeholders, including political parties and the citizenry.
“We serve as the midwives that birth the elections, we are the referees that conduct, that lay the elections and the processes that lead to the election day itself. As referees, we are committed to ensuring that our activities from now in the lead-up to the election and all our electoral processes are transparent, open, fair, and involve the collaboration of our key stakeholders," Mensa stated.
The Chairperson underscored the EC's dedication to maintaining transparency across all its operations, reinforcing the integrity of the electoral process. She appealed to all election contestants to embrace the outcomes, recognizing that elections naturally produce both winners and losers.
Adding to Mensa's appeal, Ebenezer Djietror, the Deputy Clerk of Parliament in Charge of Corporate and Financial Management Services, stressed the importance of peace and security during the 2024 general elections. His remarks underscored a collective desire for a peaceful electoral process, free from conflict and unrest.
