In a significant breakthrough against cocoa smuggling, twelve individuals are now in police custody after attempting to bribe members of the National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce in Kwahu Adawso, located in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region. This group is suspected to be part of a larger cocoa smuggling syndicate.

The suspects were apprehended through a joint operation involving the Ministry of National Security, the Formed Police Unit, and the Ghana Cocoa Board. Acting on intelligence, the taskforce intercepted two trucks, registered AS 2653-12 and GS 4220-12, loaded with 400 bags of cocoa beans destined for Togo. Among those arrested were drivers, their assistants, boat operators, and loading boys, caught in the act of offloading the contraband.

Emmanuel Atta Ofori Snr., Chairman of the Kwahu South Municipal Security Council, praised the security forces for their integrity and determination in carrying out the arrests despite being offered a bribe of GH¢80,000. Addressing the media, he expressed his commitment to ensuring that justice is served. "We have arrested twelve individuals who are now in police custody. I am committed to monitoring the legal process closely to ensure that the law is upheld. Swift adjudication by the prosecution and judiciary is crucial in cases like this to apply necessary sanctions and deter future offenses," he stated.

This incident marks the third such arrest in the Kwahu South Municipality within two months. Previously, similar operations had intercepted smuggled cocoa beans on a cargo vehicle ferry and a tipper truck, underscoring the persistent efforts of smugglers. "Today's interception of a Kia Rhino loaded with cocoa beans shows that smugglers are actively operating. Let this be a message to them: the Kwahu South Municipal Security Council will not relent in its efforts to combat smuggling," declared Mr. Atta Ofori Snr.

The smuggling route typically spans from Suhum through Adawso to Togo via Dzemeni in the Kwahu Afram Plains area. Emphasizing the importance of national integrity, Mr. Atta Ofori Snr. called on his fellow Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and state security services to remain vigilant and patriotic. He also made a heartfelt appeal to the judiciary to expedite these cases to serve as a strong deterrent.

The collaborative efforts and recent arrests signify a robust stand against cocoa smuggling, aiming to protect Ghana's valuable cocoa industry from financial losses and illegal exploitation. The community remains hopeful that these measures will curb the smuggling activities and restore confidence in the security apparatus.
